Free Guided Walks
Saturdays
There is no charge for participants and no advance sign-up. You only need to
show up at the designated starting point at 10 a.m. Please bring your own
pack-lunch.
Saturday 30. June: Botanical and geological theme tour of the park adjacent to
Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter. Tour leader: Inger Fure. Duration: 3 hours.
Meeting point: main building entrance. Tour leader will give an account of the
historical use of the plants, and tell the story of the most important rocks in
Norway.
Saturday 7. July: Local history walks along the nature trail at
Nesodden in Lodalen. Guide: Jens Hogrenning. Duration ca. 3 – 4 hours.
Starting point: toll bar in Bødalen. Our guide will tell the story of the
Lodalen rock slides occurring in 1905 and 1936, and point out the marks of the
consequent flood waves in this valley.
Saturday 14. July: Geology walk .Guide professor Atle Nesje, duration 5
hours.
Starting point: car park at the Åbrek bridge. During the walk in Brenndalen, the
participants will learn about Brenndalsbreen during the Little Ice Age.
.Saturday 21. July: Walk in Grasdalen .Guide Johan Berge, topic: local
history and geology, 4 hours. Meetingpoint: Parkingplace at Grasdalen.beside
the tunnel. The tour leader will spotlight snow avalanches and research, water
damming, sedimentation in lakes and cultural heritage.
Saturday 28. July: Local history excursion to Stol in Glomsdalen .Guide
Jørgen Skåre, duration 8 hours.
Meeting point: Oppstryn skule. Glomsdalen is a 10 km long mountain valley with
old settlements and cultural landscapes. Innermost in Glomsdalen, building sites
and cooking pits from the Iron Age are evidence of ca. 3000 year old
settlements. There are 5 summer dairies in the valley,
Saturday 4. August: Local history excursion in Kjenndalen Guide Jens Hogrenning,
duration 3 – 4 hours.
Meeting point: Kjenndalsstova. This valley has been a popular tourist
destination for more than 100 years. En route, the tour leader will give a
historical account of the valley, and demonstrate evidence of the forces of rock
slides and snow avalanches.
