Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre
Green water, high snowcovered mountains- and in the
middle Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre. Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre
is situated at the national park and beside the lake Strynsvatn, which was a
part of the fjords thousands of years ago. The breathtaking landscape, the lake,
and the mountains make a fantastic living postcard that you will never forget.
Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre is owned by a private foundation based
on idealistic objectives. Prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland officiated at the
formal opening of the Centre on June 19, 1993.
The main building at the Centre has been constructed in a
manner similar to Viking longhouses where pillars rather than the walls are
supporting the roof. The Viking longhouse here at Jostedalsbreen National Park
Centre has about the size of the biggest longhouse found in Norway. Arcitect is
Stryn Arkitektkontor. As a contrast to the old longhouse is the Cinema built in
modern style, covered by Norwegian polished stone, Larvikitt. This symbolizes
the meeting between the past and the future. Jostedalsbreen National Parc Centre
is based on the pasted to care for the future.
Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre has been authorized
by the Department of Environment to serve as an official national park visitor
centre
