Saturday 9. July:
Botanical and historical walk to Glomsdalen and the hill farm Sigdestad with
Inger Fure, ca. 5 hours. Meeting point: Oppstryn skule.
Round trip. Start on the regular summer
farm track in Glomsdalen to Glomnessætra. Cross the large stream Glomsdøla.
Descend through the woods to Sigdestad farm, which was in operation until 1963.
Today, this hill farm is being maintained and renovated by “Segestads Vener”.
Rich flora of the kind that need sheltered surroundings. A lot of local
history.
Saturday 16. July:
Geological and botanical trip to Sogneskaret in Sunndalen, with Atle Nesje,
professor, and Mons Kvamme, researcher. Duration 6 – 7 hours. Meeting point:
Buda at Folven.
During the middle 1980s, Atle Nesje made
a discovery in Sogneskaret which, in plain language, has been referred to as
“the birth certificate of Jostedalsbreen”. Pollen remains from a bog indicated
that Jostedalsbreen had been completely melted away and reappeared ca. 6000
years ago. Mons Kvamme conducted botanical research in Sygneskaret. He proved
that there had been elm trees 6000 – 7000 years ago at the place where birch
trees are growing today. Come along on an exciting excursion led by a botanist
and a geologist telling the dramatic history of the glacier.
Saturday 23.
July: Historical excursion to Erdalsbreen with Marie Johanne Folven. Duration:
8-9 hours. Meeting point: parking lot at Greidung.
This used to be the old thoroughfare
between Sogn and Nordfjord. Today, this is the most common starting point for
the trek “Josten på langs” (lengthwise crossing of Jostedalsbreen). We pass by
the summer dairies Erdalssetra and Vetledalssetra in the gently sloping Erdalen
valley, and then ascend towards Erdalsbreen, our turnaround point.
Saturday
30 July: Viper safari at Flo with Even Flo.
Duration: ca. 3 – 4 hours. Meeting point: Flo skule.
Our guide brings us to viper habitats
at Flo and tells about vipers. If the weather conditions prevent us from
spotting vipers, our guide will show us exciting places in the hamlet and tell
interesting histories.
Saturday
6. August: Summit walk to Nakken at Hjelle with
Marie Johanne Folven. Duration: 4 hours. Meeting point: Oppstryn skule.
The route is steep but not long. Takes
off from the Glomsdalen trail. Rough terrain up to the high point Nakken,
altitude ca. 600 m. Fabulous view of Oppstryn.
Glacier tongues are continually receding. Professor Atle
Nesje at Universitetet i Bergen has informed us about the withdrawal of the most
well-known glaciers in Stryn the last year:
Briksdalsbreen +8 m
Bødalsbreen – 65 m
Kjenndalsbreen 0 m
Brenndalsbreen 0 m
